April - early May - great catch & release fishing on the famed Susquehanna Flats that form the headwaters of the Chesapeake Bay. The large coastal migrant stripers arrive in waves to gorge on the hordes of herring and shad that cross the Flats on their spawning runs to the Susquehanna River. Much of the water here is very shallow and we target the stripers in the shallows with plastics, top water lures, and flies. Anglers have an excellent chance to catch that fish of a lifetime here.

May - June – I work my “home” water in the Kent Narrows area which is a few miles east of Annapolis. At this time of the year the target is a mix of the large ocean-run and resident “schoolie” size stripers as they work their way out of the spawning areas in the mid and upper portion of the Chesapeake. We chase the fish from the shallows out to humps and other offshore structure at this time of the year.

July & August has the resident stripers set up on offshore humps, ledges, and points and we’ll be right with ‘em. We fish the main body of the Chesapeake Bay this time of the year and often find large schools of fish on the offshore structure. Jigging with light tackle and fly fishing with fast sinking lines are the primary tactics. This fishing is also from the Kent Narrows area.

September – early November is fall blitz time on the Chesapeake. Stripers are blitzing baitfish on the surface, gulls are wheeling and diving, and we’re right in the middle of all of it! This is prime time to catch large numbers of stripers on any tackle you wish. Fishing is also based from the Kent Narrows area.

Late November through December is great for both quantity and quality fish. We fish the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel (CBBT) area at this time of the year to intercept the large migration of ocean run stripers working their way down from New England. These fish enter the mouth of the Bay to feed on the large schools of menhaden migrating out at the same time. This is big water, big fish fishing at it’s best.
